Ragi Recipes | Collection of 14 Ragi Recipes

Ragi, a tiny brown cereal with lots of health benefits is commonly used in most parts of India. These grains are known as “FINGER MILLET” in English and “NACHNI” in Hindi. Ragi is widely consumed in southern part of India as wholesome cereal. This cereal can be used to prepare dosa, idli, roti, laddu and even porridge for babies. I have put together  collection of 14 ragi recipes for you. Check this.

HEATLH BENEFITS OF RAGI:

  • Ragi is rich in calcium and iron which is helpful for growing kids and aging women.
  • It has cooling properties and very appropriate to consume in summer season.
  • Due to it’s low glycemic index ragi is said to be good for diabetic people.
  • Ragi is easily digestible and hence can be used as porridge for infants.

COLLECTION OF 14 WONDERFUL RAGI RECIPES

Fermented Ragi Dosa :


This dosa is prepared using ragi flour and black gram lentils. The batter is fermented for good number of hours and then used to prepare dosa. It is soft and tasty like normal rice dosa.

Ragi Idli (finger millet idli)–

Ragi idli is prepared using ragi grains instead of ragi flour. The whole grain is soaked and ground along with lentils to get the batter. This batter is fermented like idli batter.  This can be used to make soft, spongy idli. It’s a very good alternative to rice idli.

Ragi Rotti – Finger millet pancake :

Ragi rotti or ragi roti is a pancake prepared using ragi flour. It is mixed with some spices and combined with warm water to dough form. This dough is then patted thin like pancake and cooked over skillet. This roti bit harder than dosa but tastes awesome with spicy chutney.

Ragi roti – Ragi ubbu rotti:

Unlike ragi rotti above, this ragi ubbu rotti is very soft pancake prepared using ragi flour and hot water.  Instead of pattin, this dough is rolled like chapati and then cooked. Ragi roti puffs up like poori and retains softness for longer.

Ragi Halbai :

Ragi can also used to prepare sweets and desserts.  Instead of ragi flour, the ragi grains are soaked and ground to make this halbai. It is combined with jaggery and stirred to get the halwa like consistency. This sweet is genuinely tasty and mouthwatering.

Ragi neer dosa :

If you are looking for instant breakfast or snack, then this ragi neer dosa comes very handy.  Using ragi flour and few spices, watery batter is prepared. It is then poured like neer dosa. This thin and soft dosa is absolutely a bliss.

Ragi soup :

Ragi soup is a unique recipe which is helpful for weight loss. It has all the nutrients with plenty of veggies and keeps you full for long. A bowl of soup would suffice for dinner if you love to keep your weight in check.

Ragi Sendige (Finger millet fryum):

This long lasting condiment ragi sending (fryum) can also be prepared using ragi.  During summer season fryums can be prepared and used through out the year. After deep frying in oil, they taste too good with rice-rasam.

Ragi nippattu :

This deep fried goody ragi nippattu is amazingly delicious snack. Ragi flour is mixed with lots of spices and peanuts. The dough is patted and deep fried in oil which turns in to a great evening snack.

Ragi godhi dosa:

Finger millet combined with wheat turns amazing as dosa. The whole grains when minced make a batter having proper consistency of dosa. It’s a healthy breakfast or dinner option for sure.

Ragi milk porridge (ragi manni) :

Ragi porridge is the baby food which happen to be first semi solid food introduced.  With adequate amount of finger millet and wheat, sun dried biscuits are prepared. They can be used to prepare porridge instantly as and when needed.

Ragi Laddu :

Ragi Laddu is a sweet that can be prepared quickly with ingredients in hand. It serves as a great after school snack for kids.

Ragi malt :

Ragi malt is a kind of beverage that keeps you full for long. So for people who like to reduce weight can drink this ragi malt for breakfast or dinner replacing the solid food. It tastes yummy with mild sweetness and nuts topped.

Ragi Shavige:

It’s quite easy to make shavige using ragi flour or finger millet flour. Kids love eating this as it looks like noodle. Ragi shavige is good for health and it is tasty too.
