The word “instant” is insanely significant in the life of a Woman. If she happens to be a working woman who has less time for ‘Cooking’ then “instant” is quite critical. If something delicious gets cooked instantly in little or no time, it is much appreciated. Since you, super woman of the world look for “instant food” always, I thought of making Home made instant rava upma mix. During weekends or whenever you can spare some extra time in the kitchen, make a batch of  rava upma mix. It will surely come handy as you run out of time during the week.

Let me consider one more scenario where instant food gets much significance => Travel. When you travel abroad where probably your kind of food isn’t easily available, then a pack of instant rava upma mix can rescue you from starving. All you need to find is a cup of really hot boiling water to make your breakfast or dinner. Or if you are staying in a hotel where oven is provided, then  it’s easy making rava upma using this MIX.

The third  and most important benefit of instant rava upma mix is to your adult children. If your young kids stay away from you for the sake of study or work,  this MIX is most beneficial. Younger generation is  in love with INSTANT version where no or less cooking involved. As they can get some hot boiling water easily near their place, this instant food can overwhelmingly satisfy them.

Right now, though I don’t fall in any of the above category, it’s very convenient for me to stock this instant MIX. Because  at times, it is easy to whip up instant dinner. I even add some cooked veggies like fresh peas or chopped carrots making a wholesome food for my family.

Instructions

Method

  • Heat a pan, add peanuts. With constant stirring roast them till they shed the skin. Transfer over a plate. As it cools down, peel off the skin. Next add oil and both the lentils. Saute till they slightly change color.
  • Followed by lentils, add cashews. Saute till it turns little brown. Transfer them and next add mustard and cumin seeds. As they start sizzling throw in chopped green chillies and ginger. Saute till they are done.
  • Next add rava to the pan, with constant stirring roast it for at least 5 minutes. When the rava becomes aromatic, add salt and turmeric powder. Saute for few more seconds and switch off.
  • Next in a wide bowl, take all the roasted ingredients like cashews, peanuts, lentils and rava. Mix them thouroughly. Let this mix cool down completely. Then store it in a glass container with lid closed.
  • Instant rava upma mix is ready. You can prepare upma in just 5 minutes.
  • In order to make upma out of this mix, Boil 1 cup of water and include 1/2 cup of this instant mix. Stir and let it cook for 5 minutes. Switch off and relish instant breakfast.

Notes

  • Since this instant mix is used for longer storage, ensure all the ingredients are roasted well. Especially chillies and ginger.
  • Before storing the instant mix in a container, let it cool down completely. You can even let it overnight for cooling.
  • Use glass container for storage instead of plastic ones.
  • To prepare upma instantly, use double the quantity of water. i.e instant mix to water ratio is 1:2.
  • If you want, you can add cooked veggies like peas and carrots when you boil water.
  • Squeeze in some lemon at the end for the enhanced taste of upma.
  • You can store this mix for as long as 3 months in a glass jar.

Hello Dr. Shrinidhi, you can use this instant upma mix itself as idli mix. Skip adding green chillies. While preparing idli, use yogurt, baking soda and lots of coriander leaves.
