Rava Jaggery Laddu | No Sugar Recipe

September 1, 2018

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Just beginning of September.  And we are  welcoming it with auspicious festival Sri Krishna Janmashtami. When festivals are lined up one after the other, I get over excited in kitchen making sweets and snacks. And this time I thought of remaking rava laddu using jaggery instead of sugar which we normally use. Though some sweet things are acceptable during festivals, I try to suppress sugar as far as possible keeping health in mind.  This rava jaggery laddu has taken some inspiration from my mom’s cooking. She had made these amazingly delicious sweet things several times and I loved her creativity of using jaggery over sugar. Love you mom.

On my way back to UAE after vacation, my food mind was wandering over all the good stuff that mom served me and made a potential list of what should appear here. This rava jaggery laddu topped the list and I recreated mom’s magic of love in the form laddu. Trust me, they tasted healthy and yummy.

rava jaggery laddu

Though this laddu can be prepared using rava alone, I have included powdered peanut too. Because the blend of peanut with rava is good while coconut gives crunchy-ness. This laddu has fresh coconut which is sauteed well in jaggery syrup to increase the shelf life. In case, you wonder about how long the laddu last, let me convince you. It stays good and delicious for 2 weeks which is fairly long. Isn’t it?

Rava Jaggery Laddu | No Sugar Recipe

Rava laddu is an easy laddu which can be whipped up in a jiffy. I have used jaggery instead of sugar in rava laddu which tastes even better.
Prep Time15 minutes mins
Cook Time20 minutes mins
Total Time35 minutes mins
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: Indian
Servings: 10

Ingredients

  • Medium rava- 1/2 cup
  • Peanuts- 1/2 cup
  • Fresh grated coconut- 1/2 cup
  • Jaggery- 1 cup
  • Cardamom powder- 1/4 tsp
  • Ghee- 3 tsp

Instructions

Method

  • Heat a pan with 2 tsp of ghee and rava. With constant stirring, roast it in medium flame. Keep it aside.
    rava jaggery laddu step 1
  • Followed by rava, roast the peanuts until the skin peels off and black spots appear on them. Transfer it to a plate.
    rava jaggery laddu step2
  • Next peeling all the skin from peanuts, powder it using mixer.
    rava jaggery laddu step 3
  • Next take jaggery in a pan with 1/8 cup of water. Let it cook till jaggery dissolves completely.
    rava jaggery laddu step 4
  • When jaggery syrup boils with bubbles, include coconut. Let coconut cook in syrup for 5 minutes.
    rava jaggery laddu step 5
  • Add in powdered peanuts and rava to the cooked coconut in jaggery syrup.
    rava jaggery laddu step 6
  • Switch off the flame and mix everything together. Finally add cardamom powder and remainig ghee. Divide it in to 10 equal portions and shape as laddu.
    rava jaggery laddu step 7
  • Easy rava jaggery laddu is ready to be relished on Janmashtami.

Notes

  • You can use store bought roasted peanuts to reduce kitchen time.
  • It's not necessary to check the consistency of jaggery syrup. When jaggery dissolves in water and starts bubbling, it's done.
  • Applying little ghee to your palm helps to shape the laddus.
  • You can add cashews and raisins also which I have skipped.
  • Though fresh coconut is used, the laddu stays good for 2 weeks.
