It’s the end of July month and I am half way done with my vacationing in India, my homely motherland. It reminds of my pre-vacation time when I was working hard for my food blog thing ready with fixed set of posts so that I can relax, enjoy and feel free during vacation.
Those were super busy days with just cooking-photographing-editing-collaging-writing-scheduling posts in a row. As it is said “Hardwork always rewards”, now I am getting that REWARD in the form of free-blog mood spending happy, happy moments with my parents. I can’t tell you how much I love these moments, to just be. Thank you vacation.
I am just making IN and OUT of my blog not so often just to check you guys’ comments and mails. That’s it.
Lately I am hanging around watermelon rind and watermelon peel recipes. Do you remember watermelon rind saasmi that I posted couple of months ago. On those same days I also tried my hands at watermelon peel tambli. Those who are following my blog for a long would be familiar with the rice side dish that I often post. If you are a new commer, let me define it as a simple yogurt based curry that needs handful of ingredients and few minutes of your time.
So today it’s a tambli / tambuli prepared using watermelon peel. Yes PEEL. Half a cup of chopped watermelon peels are roasted and pureed with coconut, salt and green chilli which then combined with buttermilk to get a nice curry consistency. Exceptionally delicious watermelon peel tambli will just tempt you to prepare.
Watermelon Peel Tambli | Tambuli Recipe

- Fresh grated coconut- 5 tsp or fistful
- Buttermilk- 1/2 cup
- Salt- 3/4 tsp
- Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
- Green chillies- 2 nos.
Seasoning ingredients
- Cooking oil- 1 tsp
- Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
Instructions
Method
- Chop the watermelon peel in to medium sized pieces. Heat a cooking pan with oil and cumin seeds. Include chopped watermelon peels too and saute for 3 to 5 minutes.
- In a mixer jar include roasted watermelon pieces, grated coconut, green chillies and salt. Adding little water grind to make fine puree. Transfer it to a bowl and mix with buttermilk.
- Heat a seasoning pan adding oil and mustard seeds, as the seeds crackle transfer the seasoning to prepared tambli.
- Watermelon peel tambli is ready to relish with steamed rice.
Notes
- It's not necessary to roast the watermelon peel for long. You can roast it for just 3 to 5 minutes.
- If you don't have buttermilk, you can whisk yoghurt with some water and use.
- Fresh buttermilk or whisked yoghurt gives best results than sour one.

I just prepared this in San Jose. It tastes very similar to Majjige huli. The coloration in my dish is more brownish white than green – probably has to do with the watermelon, in my case it was striped green.
You have a fantastic array of recipes. I made the bendekayi palya yesterday from your collection and it was again very tasty.
I am going to try your mixed vegetable curry that you posted today! I saw your Youtube channel too. Amazing!
