UAE is hit back by cold, chilly winter weather with drizzling rain in between since last 4days. The cold wind biting through skin makes most of us sick. Yes, both my kids badly caught up by running nose, cough and fever. When kids are sick, parents are almost sick in taking extra care, convincing them to take medicines and food. A horrible side effect of being sick is that the appetite basically disappears. It’s hard to convince fuzzy eaters when their hunger has disappeared. So I prepared this simple, mild and quick moong dal recipe in Udupi style as main course accompanied by beans stir fry, on last Saturday. It was a big hit on that really sick day!!!!
Seasoned with ginger, green chillies and cumin seeds, topped with lemon juice, this moong dal is a perfect combination with steamed rice. My family also enjoys this dal as side dish for Idli. Let me brief you the recipe.
Moong Dal Recipe in Udupi Style
Ingredients
- Moong dal- 1/2 cup
- Ginger- 3" piece
- Green chillies- 4 nos.
- Coriander leaves- handful
- Lemon medium sized - half
Seasoning Ingredients
- Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
- Oil - 1 tsp
- Ghee- 1 tsp
- Broken red chilly- 1 no.
- Curry leaves- 1 strand
Instructions
Preparation
- Pressure cook moong dal adding around a cup of water. I cooked it for 3 whistles, then in simmer for 5 minutes.
- Chop green chillies, ginger, curry leaves and coriander leaves very finely.
Method
- Mash cooked moong dal and transfer it in to a vessel. Add a cup of water and turmeric powder. Cook it in medium flame.
- Now heat a seasoning pan, add ghee as well as oil then cumin seeds, chopped ginger, green chillies and curry leaves. When the green chillies change in color, switch off. Add this seasoning to moong dal which is cooking in medium flame.
- Now add salt and mix well. Switch off the flame. Squeeze half of lemon to moong dal.
- Moong dal is ready. Serve it hot with steamed rice and idli. Perfect side dish for both.
Note:
- Unlike other curries, dal has to be thick. But consistency is completely individual's choice. Add water accordingly.
- Dal usually tastes mild, you can increase green chillies for more spiciness.
- You can add asafoetida too.
Meet you all with one more interesting recipe. Till then bye.
