Cooking a traditional Udupi meal at my home on weekend involves rice, rasam, stir fry, salad and occasional simple kheer just like Dates kheer. My family enjoys this wholesome meal on lazy weekends. Weekends are lazy for each single member in the family but only exception is housewife or home maker. Home makers hands are completely full on these days in making special dishes for breakfast, lunch and a salivating snack. So on such hectic schedule days, few recipes come to my rescue that not only take few minutes to cook but also taste delicious. One such recipe is cabbage stir fry which is very simple and straight forward side dish with rice-rasm or chapati.
I make cabbage stir fry using minimum ingredients that also includes most beneficial spice like turmeric that is full of anti oxidants. Retaining the crunchiness of cabbage I have added cumin seeds flavor also to the stir fry. Red chilly gives the spicy note and jaggery mild sweetness. Check this version of cabbage stir fry when you have very less time to spend in kitchen.
Cabbage Stir fry | Cabbage Palya Recipe
Ingredients
- Cabbage - 250 gm
- Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
- Salt- 3/4 tsp
- Jaggery- 1 tsp
- Grated coconut- 3 tsp
- Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
- Red chilly Byadagi variety- 1 no.
Seasoning ingredients
- Coconut oil- 4 tsp
- Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
- Split black gram lentil- 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves- few
Instructions
Preparation
- Finely chop cabbage and keep it aside.
Method
- Heat a pan adding all the seasoning ingredients in the order mentioned, when mustard seeds splutter add finely chopped cabbage to it. Saute for a while.
- Add jaggery, salt and turmeric powder to it. Cook it covered till soft adding 1/4 cup of water.
- Meanwhile add grated coconut, cumin seeds and red chilly to mixer and grind it coarsely without adding water. This is masala for cabbage stir fry.
- Add this masala to cooked cabbage, stir and cook for few minutes so that masala gets blended well. Then switch off.
- Cabbage stir fry is ready to serve. It is a good side dish with chapati and rice-rasam combo.
Note
- Do not too much water to cook cabbage. It may become soggy.
- It is mild spiced stir fry, use additional red chilly to suit your taste buds.
- Keep stirring in between to ensure stir fry is not burnt.
