Today it’s a breakfast recipe for those of you who like to have South Indian kind of food. Yes it’s a DOSA. Dosa or “Dose” however you call it, it’s such a fulfilling food and I can live eating only this my entire life. Crazy isn’t it? Yes. Idli and Dosa are two such foods which are very close to my heart and soul and if they are available, I can live in any part of the world  without any complaint. They are the comfort food for any South Indian for that matter.

Watermelon rind dosa

Having said that, today I have brought a Dosa prepared out of PEEL or to be specific RIND!! Yes, it’s a WATERMELON RIND DOSA where I am using the white part of Watermelon to prepare a batter and make dosa. The reason why I  love this “Dose” is because of it’s texture. It’s insanely soft, spongy or cotton like. I would say it just melts in your mouth. As you pour the batter on griddle, the holes get to form on top and it gets nice brown color at the back. It’s irresistible to hop on to it and eat right away.

So, in this season of Watermelon, do try this recipe and let me know in comments how you liked it. Check the video:

Watermelon Rind Dosa | ಕಲ್ಲಂಗಡಿ ಹಣ್ಣಿನ ಸಿಪ್ಪೆಯ ದೋಸೆ

Spongy, cotton like dosa using white part of Watermelon that is Rind
Prep Time15 minutes mins
Cook Time2 minutes mins
Resting time8 hours hrs
Course: Breakfast
Cuisine: Karnataka
Servings: 12 Dosa
Author: Sumana

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Raw Rice
  • 2 tsp White Lentils
  • 1 tsp Fenugreek seeds
  • 1.4 cup Rice flakes
  • 2 cups Watermelon rind cubes
  • 1 tsp Salt

Instructions

  • Rinse and soak rice in enough water for about 4 hours
  • Rinse and soak lentils, fenugreek seeds and rice flakes together in water for about 4 hours
  • Add lentils, fenugreek seeds, rice flakes and watermelon rind in to a mixer jar. Grind them all together without adding water. Transfer the batter in to a vessel.
  • Next, add soaked rice to same mixer and grind finely with only little water. Transfer this batter to the same vessel as above and mix well. Let it rest in warm place for about 8 hours for fermentation.
  • The fermented batter would have raised in volume. Add salt and mix well.
  • Pour ladle full of batter on hot griddle and cook for few minutes. Remove and serve hot with coconut chutney and sambar of your choice.

Notes

Do not add much water while grinding as watermelon contains lot of moisture. And that is enough for ease of grinding.
Let the batter ferment for good number of hours otherwise dosa will not turn spongy.
