Today is Ganesha chaturthi, on this auspicious day  modaka/modak/modakam is offered to Lord Ganesha as naivedyam which is his favorite dish. Modaka is a sweet dumpling which has special importance in the worship of lord Ganesha. There are many versions of modaka preparation throughout India. In Udupi we prepare it through steaming and main ingredient used is either rice or rava. Today I am sharing modaka prepared using rava, coconut and jaggery. Here we go with modaka recipe.

Modaka/Modak/Modakam Recipe

Cook Time40 minutes mins
Total Time40 minutes mins
Author: Sumana

Ingredients

  • Rava used in upama preparation- 1 cup
  • Grated coconut- 1 cup
  • Jaggery- 3/4 cup
  • Cardamom- 2 pods
  • Ghee- 2 tea spoon

Instructions

Method

  • In a heavy bottom kadai/pan add ghee and rava. Get the rava roasted in low flame for around 4 minutes or till you get nice aroma. Ensure it is not burnt. Transfer it to a container.
  • Grind the grated coconut along with peeled cardamom to fine paste adding little water.
  • Now again heat the heavy bottom kadai/pan adding jaggery and little water(1/4 cup). Keep stirring till the jaggery dissolves and syrup becomes thick. Now add 2 cups of water to the syrup.
  • When jaggery syrup starts boiling add roasted rava and ground coconut paste. Saute till it becomes mass dumpling. Switch off the flame.
  • When your hands can bear the heat of dumpling, make big lemon sized balls out of it and make a small hole on it. (as shown in figure below). Arrange all modakas thus prepared in a idly stand and steam cook it for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Lord Ganesh's favorite modaka/modak/madakams are ready to be served with hot ghee. It will just melt in your mouth. yammmy......................

Note:

  • Use rava that is meant for preparing upama. Do not use medium rava. Medium rava needs pre-steaming before use in modaka.
Meet you all with one more interesting Udupi recipe. Till then bye.

The rava used in the recipe is not chiroti or medium rava. You need to choose rava that is not so fine and used in upama preparation. Modak using rice is different recipe all together.
