INSTANT LEMON SEVAI | LEMON SEMIYA | SHAVIGE

September 30, 2019

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Lemon sevai, is going to be a staple breakfast during this Navaratri. I guess so. Because pretty much simple yet amazingly delicious food can never be sidelined. They have to be devoured with much honor and dignity. This holds true for lemon semiya according to me. Some times I never go beyond my routine breakfast of dosa and chapati and I keep tweaking the same. And randomly when I thought to make sevai, it tastes way too delicious. Like the way it happened today.

instant lemon sevai

Sevai or shavige making is quite elaborated process. If ottu shavige is to be prepared in Udupi style, then it comes with tedious tasks. So I keep those stuff during weekends. On weekdays big No, No to it. But trust me, this lemon sevai can be whipped up in just 30 minutes. Like any other easy breakfast, it doesn’t need much of your time.

So instant lemon sevai is prepared using rava shavige. No soaking and grinding business to make rava shavige. Which is why it is my go-to recipe of breakfast and evening snack. After trying yourself, you would surely agree with me. Isn’t it?

Total Time25 minutes mins
Course: Breakfast
Cuisine: Indian
Servings: 3
Author: Sumana

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fine rava
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 tsp Salt

! To temper

  • 3 tsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Split black gram (urad dal)
  • few Curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp peanuts
  • 2 nos. Green chillies
  • 1 tbsp Cashews optional
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Salt or to taste
  • 1/2 Lemon
  • 2 tbsp Fresh coconut
  • 1 tbsp Coriander leaves chopped

Instructions

  • Heat a pan adding 2 cups of water. Add salt. Bring it to rolling boil. Stirring continuously add fine rava.
    Instant lemon sevai step 1
  • Mix the rava in water such that no lumps are formed. Cook it for 2 to 3 minutes until all water is absorbed and mixture becomes thick. Transfer it to a plate and let it slightly cool down.
    Instant lemon sevai step 2
  • Next, grease some oil to palm and knead the rava mixture. Divide it in to two portions. Fill in a portion in to shavige (idiyappam) press.
    Instant lemon sevai step 3
  • On idli plate, press the shavige like small idlis. Place all the plates in a steamer and cook for 5 to 10 minutes. Let them cool down completely.
    Instant lemon sevai step 4
  • Next heat a pan add oil, mustard seeds, lentils, curry leaves. Saute till the mustard sizzle. Include peanuts, cashews, slit green chillies, turmeric powder and continue sauteing few more minutes. Adjust salt now.
    Instant lemon sevai step 5
  • Next, break the shavige in to this tempering pan and give a nice mix. Squeeze lemon and garnish with coconut and coriander leaves. Instant lemon sevai is ready to serve.
    Instant lemon sevai step 6

Notes

  • This recipe needs fine rava which known as chiroti rava or bombay rava. Do not use coarse one.
  • Since we add enough salt to sevai itself, it doesn't need much of it while seasoning. So adjust according to your taste.
