Let me call this rice side dish as INSTANT, 10 minute recipe. Because all it takes is 10 minutes of your time and the best part is No Cooking involved at all. So whenever you run out of your vegetable stock except a bag of onions then call => Onion Saasmi. Or if you have dropped just in the morning after a vacation and you are looking for an instant rice side dish, then this humble saasmi can rescue you. And those of you who love the taste of raw onion in your meal would surely love this one.
Saasmi is a variety of curry in Udupi Cuisine that can be prepared in two ways: Raw and Cooked. Cucumber and onion are two veggies that can be used to make saasmi in Raw version. Where as Mangalore cucumber and beetroots are used to make cooked version of saasmi.
Onion saasmi has flavor of mustard seeds and it tastes delicious with the crunchiness of onion. The sweet bites of onion is so much rewarding on it’s own. Since coconut and onion are used in raw form, the curry will not last longer. You can cook this for single meal like lunch or dinner but cannot store for later use. And I won’t recommend refrigerating the curry since it has raw onion.
