Green Gram Sundal | Hesarukalu Oggarane

Lentils and legumes are more of my life these days. Every day is a salad day at my home now. It’s because kids love the lentils and / or legume salad more than anything in the world provided it has cooling cucumber in it.  So I make sure that I have a big pile of cucumber in my refrigerator and big jar of lentils plus legumes all the time.

Right now, truth of the matter is not about lentils salad which I even want to talk about. It’s all this green gram sundal or green gram stir fry that purely can replace the salad, any time snack of kids. The ingredients remain the same except cucumber.

yummy green gram sundal

The green gram sundal is so easy and I sort of hesitate to call it as a recipe. Because all you need to do is soaking, seasoning and topping generously with fresh grated coconut.

But let me tell you one thing, though it seems so simple some times it can take you nowhere. Once I had added the soaked green gram directly in to the seasoning to get it cooked. Believe me, it didn’t get cooked at all.  Even after half an hour of cooking the legumes ended up being hard and rough which otherwise would need only few minutes to turn soft. So however simple it may be, it’s always advisable to check the recipe and it’s associated notes, tips and troubleshooting.

Notes

  • If you forget soaking green gram, then you can try pressure cooking it directly.
  • This tastes mild spicy, for additional spicy-ness include one more green chilly.
  • Never cook soaked green gram in seasoning because green gram doesn't cook so easily in seasoning.
  • Include generous amount of fresh grated coconut for wonderful taste.
