I reach out a packet of Aval when I am craving for food. I reach out for the same bag when I run out of Idli/dosa batter and need a filling breakfast as quick fix. I reach out for the same rice flakes when I find shortage of rice for the dinner. Aval is such a demanding and loving thing in my family.
Aval or poha is so versatile ingredient that when you temper it with onions and spices turns in to aval upma, mix it with grated coconut and jaggery results in sweet poha, cook it with vegetables and bisi bele bath powder transforms in to exquisite one pot meal. Almost all dishes that we make using rice can be made by substituting rice by poha.
Aval upma, a very quick, delicious breakfast or evening snack made in few minutes but fills your tummy to the full. I am posting the basic version of upma using only handful of spices and ingredients, feel free to include some cooked vegetables and greens, you will still be pleasantly surprised to find a bowl of deliciously tasting poha upma. Aval Upma | Poha Upma Recipe | Easy Breakfast Recipes
Ingredients
- Thick aval- 1 cup
- Onion- 1 medium sized
- Green chillies- 2 nos.
- Grated coconut- 3 tsp
- Salt- 3/4 tsp
- Sugar- 1 tsp
- Lemon- 1/2 piece
- Coriander leaves- fistful
Seasoning ingredients
- Cooking oil- 6tsp
- Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
- Split black gram lentil urad dal- 1 tsp
- chana dal- 1 tsp
- Curry leaves- few
- Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
- Groundnut- 3 tsp
Instructions
Preparation
- Wash aval in enough water and soak it for few minutes in immersing level water till the aval becomes soft(not mushy). Drain the water completely and keep the aval aside.
- Finely chop onion, coriander leaves and green chillies, set aside.
Method
- Heat a wok adding cooking oil, mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves. Saute till the mustard seeds splutter. When they pop add chana dal, ground nut and turmeric powder. Saute for a while.
- Now add chopped onion and green chillies. When these onions turn translucent include drained aval, grated coconut, sugar and chopped coriander leaves. Mix well. Switch off the flame.
- Squeeze half lemon or 1.5 tsp of lemon juice. Aval upma is ready to serve as filling breakfast or evening snack.
Note
- Soaking time is completely dependent on quality of aval | poha. Some variety of thick poha need much time to be soft and some other become mushy within minutes.
- Do not skip adding sugar, slight sweet touch will enhance the taste of aval upma.Add it only after including aval to the seasoning.
